Finger Millet Energy Balls (කුරහන් තලප) – A Quick Fix To Your Energy Needs

brownceylonesefoodjournal, March 2, 2023March 27, 2023

Yield – 3 balls

Cooking time – 8 minutes

As the name implies it’s an energy ball made with just 2 ingredients and done in minutes. This super easy food comes with tons of benefits for your body. It’s high in vitamins (A, B), minerals (Ca, Fe, K, P), antioxidants, and dietary fiber.

Finger millet flour is my favorite of all and anything made with it is my go-to. In Sri Lanka, it’s a staple from ancient times but underrated by modern society. If you’re looking forward to losing some pounds and maintaining a good level of sugar and cholesterol levels in your blood, this is one thing you need to add to your pantry staples. Since this has a low glycemic index, it will keep you full for hours by slowly releasing sugar into the blood. This vegan and gluten-free dish is perfect for breakfast or lunch and you can combine it with any curry you want.

What you need:

  • 1 cup finger millet flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • Banana leaf / non-sticky surface

Let’s make it:

  1. Add 2 cups of water and salt into a pan and boil it.
  2. Slowly add finger millet flour and start stirring.
  3. Cook the mixture while continuously stirring with a stick or a handle of a spoon on low heat for 6-7 mins until it combines to form a soft dough.
  4. Turn off the flame and transfer the dough into a banana leaf or a non-stick surface.
  5. Wet your hands and separate the dough into 3 portions.
  6. Shape them into palm size balls while it’s still hot.
  7. Serve with a gravy of your choice. I paired this up with Horse gram curry to boost the energy content of the meal.

Tips for you:

  • Always wet your hands while working with the dough. This will prevent the stickiness of the dough and reduce temperature allowing you to handle it properly.
