Banana Blossom (Kesel muwa / කෙසෙල්මුව)Fritters Recipe – Easy, Crispy & Vegan Friendly

brownceylonesefoodjournal, July 22, 2025July 22, 2025

Looking for an easy banana blossom recipe that’s vegan and bursting with flavor? These crispy banana blossom fritters are a delicious Sri Lankan snack made with simple ingredients—and they come together without needing a blender. Whether you’re new to banana blossoms or want a quick way to enjoy this superfood, this recipe is for you.

What Is Banana Blossom?

Banana blossom (also known as banana flower or kesel muwa in Sri Lanka) is the purple flower that grows at the end of a banana cluster. It’s packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plant-based protein, and dietary fiber. Popular in South and Southeast Asian cuisines, banana blossom is often used in curries, stir-fries, and fritters.

Health Benefits of Banana Blossom

Why cook with banana blossom? Here’s why this underused ingredient is worth including in your diet:

  • High in dietary fiber – aids digestion and promotes gut health
  • Rich in antioxidants – helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress
  • May support blood sugar control – low glycemic and nutrient-dense
  • Provides iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium – essential for energy and heart health
  • Plant-based protein source – excellent for vegans and vegetarians

If you’re searching for a banana blossom recipe that’s both nutritious and delicious, these fritters are a great place to start.

Easy Banana Blossom Fritters (No Blender Needed!)

These fritters are similar in texture to Sri Lankan parippu wade (lentil fritters) but are easier to make—no soaking lentils or grinding involved. Just slice, mix, dip, and fry!

Banana Blossom Fritters Recipe

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Yield: ~20 fritters
Dietary Info: Vegan, Vegetarian, Dairy-Free

Ingredients:

  • 250 g banana blossom, cleaned and sliced into 20 thin pieces (~0.5 cm each)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons corn flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoons turmeric powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons chili powder (adjust to your spice level)
  • ¾ cup water (to form the batter)
  • 1–2 cups coconut oil, for deep frying

How to Make Banana Blossom Fritters

Step 1: Prepare the Banana Blossom

Remove outer layers and tough florets. Thinly slice into 0.5 cm rounds. Soak in water with salt and turmeric for 5–10 minutes to reduce bitterness, then pat dry.

Step 2: Make the Batter

In a bowl, mix flour, corn flour, salt, turmeric, and chili powder. Gradually add water to form a smooth, thick batter.

Step 3: Heat Coconut Oil

Heat 1–2 cups of coconut oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Test with a drop of batter—if it sizzles and rises, the oil is ready.

Step 4: Dip and Fry

Dip banana blossom slices into the batter and gently place them into the hot oil. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side or until golden and crispy.

Step 5: Drain and Serve

Remove and drain on paper towels or a metal rack. Serve hot with sliced onion, fried chillis, chili sauce, or as part of a vegan rice plate.

Cooking Tips for Perfect Banana Blossom Fritters

  • Dry the banana blossom well to help the batter stick and avoid oil splatter
  • Use medium heat so the fritters cook evenly and don’t burn
  • Add a pinch of baking soda or rice flour to the batter for extra crispiness
  • Don’t overcrowd the frying pan—this keeps the oil temperature stable
  • Serve immediately for the best crunch!

More Ways to Use Banana Blossom Fritters

These fritters are more than just a snack—you can repurpose them in creative ways! Try:

  • Making a banana blossom curry
  • Adding them to plant-based wraps or sandwiches
  • Pairing with steamed rice and dhal for a full vegan meal

I’ll be sharing these variations in my next blog posts—so stay tuned!
